Sleep Island
A choice for reviewing snoring, sleep-talk and possible teeth-grinding clips alongside sleep tracking and relaxing audio. Night Sounds is optional and must be enabled separately. You can mark a clip as not yours or delete it.
Best suited to: Trying night-sound recording with free previews before choosing Premium.
SnoreLab
A focused snoring app with charts and tags for factors or remedies. Its official FAQ describes a paid full-night recording mode; it does not promise a separate automatic sleep-talk category.
Best suited to: Comparing your snoring recordings and logged factors across nights.
Official feature details ↗Sleep Cycle
Combines sleep analysis and a smart alarm with Premium sound detection. Its sound library includes snoring and sleep talking; the paid Who's Snoring? feature is designed to help distinguish partners.
Best suited to: People who want a smart alarm and paid night-sound features in one app.
Official feature details ↗BetterSleep
Combines sleep audio with a recorder that classifies detected sounds. Its support page describes short sound clips, rather than promising continuous overnight audio playback.
Best suited to: Existing BetterSleep members who also want to hear detected night sounds.
Official feature details ↗SnoreClock
Records nighttime audio and marks suspected snoring on a sound-level timeline. Android offers a free basic app and paid Plus features, while iOS is a paid download. The iOS listing also describes markers for talking, whispering and coughing.
Best suited to: Reviewing overnight audio with a timeline, while checking the different pricing on each platform.
Official feature details ↗Pillow
An Apple-platform sleep tracker with Premium audio recording. Recording requires a manually started session with sound recording enabled and uses the iPhone or iPad microphone. Automatic Apple Watch tracking does not record sounds.
Best suited to: Apple users who want sleep tracking and are comfortable with manually started Premium recording.
Official feature details ↗Sleep as Android
An Android sleep tracker that saves triggered sound clips and labels snoring, talking and other sounds. After the full-feature trial, free tracking is restricted on some days and includes ads. Lifetime unlock and subscription options are available.
Best suited to: Android users who want tagged sound clips and a lifetime unlock option.
Official feature details ↗Which app should you choose?
For free recording with a few previews, start with Sleep Island. For a dedicated snoring log and an optional full-night mode, compare SnoreLab. SnoreClock is another overnight-audio option, with different pricing on Android and iOS. Choose Sleep Cycle for its smart alarm or check the recorder if you already pay for BetterSleep. Pillow suits Apple users who accept Premium and manual recording; Sleep as Android offers tagged clips and a lifetime unlock option on Android.
Clips, previews and full-night recording are different
A sleep talk recorder may save detected events instead of a continuous audio file. A free preview may cover only part of an original clip. In Sleep Island, the preview limit does not cut the saved original recording short; Premium unlocks playback beyond the free previews. If continuous overnight audio is essential, check that the app explicitly offers that mode.
Check privacy and who made the sound
Get consent from anyone sharing the room before recording. A microphone can pick up a partner, a pet or background audio, and labels can be wrong. Sleep Island offers a Not Me correction and deletion. Its Google Play description states that analysis happens on the device; sharing or submitting an optional correction sample may upload selected audio. Review the policy for your platform instead of assuming every feature stays offline.
Frequently asked questions
Is there a free snore recording app?
Sleep Island offers free night-sound recording with limited free previews; playback beyond those previews and Favorites require Premium. SnoreLab also has a limited free tier, including audio samples, but restricts consecutive-day use after the first five sessions. Free to download does not mean all recordings can be heard for free.
Which apps record sleep talking?
Sleep Island, Sleep Cycle, BetterSleep, Pillow and Sleep as Android describe talking or sleep-talk sounds. SnoreClock also lists talking markers on iOS. Some recording or playback features require payment; see the comparison table for each platform. Automatic detection may miss sounds or mislabel them and cannot guarantee it captures every word.
Can my phone record snoring without a watch?
Yes. Phone microphone recording does not require a wearable. In Sleep Island, start monitoring and enable Night Sounds separately, allow microphone access, and follow the placement instructions. A watch is optional for other supported features.
Does a 15-second preview mean only 15 seconds were recorded?
No. In Sleep Island, the limit applies to some free playback previews, not to the length of the saved original clip. Android currently specifies the first five clips per night, up to 15 seconds each; the iOS store description specifies some limited previews without the same clip count. Premium is needed for playback beyond free previews.
Can a snore recorder diagnose sleep apnea or stop snoring?
These recording features are for reviewing sounds, not diagnosing or treating sleep apnea. A sound label or app score cannot confirm or rule out a condition. If you are concerned about snoring or breathing during sleep, discuss it with a healthcare professional.
Can an app record teeth grinding while I sleep?
Sleep Island can capture sounds labelled as possible teeth grinding. Review the clip rather than treating its label as a confirmed finding: room noise and other sounds can be misclassified. These recordings do not diagnose bruxism.
